Power to Heal
by: Lee DeYoung
Accounts of miraculous healings are prominent throughout the Gospels and Acts. Although Jesus’ primary mission was to proclaim that “The kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matt. 10:7), along the way he demonstrated his compassion and power by healing the sick, raising the dead, and casting out demons. In Acts 3, Peter and John showed their apostolic authority by healing “a man lame from birth” (v. 2). So miraculous was this transformation that the man and a crowd of Jerusalem onlookers were “utterly astounded” (v. 11). Peter diligently redirected their admiration to the risen Christ: “faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all” (v. 16).
Examples of miraculous healing in Jesus’ name abound today as well. In the Himalayan nation of Bhutan, a Hindu priestess suffered from a chronic stomach disorder from which she unsuccessfully sought healing through numerous Hindu rituals over a period of years. Recently, a friend introduced her to the Words of Hope Dzongkha language broadcast. The message of God’s love and Jesus’ sacrifice touched her heart and inspired her at the end of the program to pray to the living God. As she prayed, she experienced complete healing. She surrendered her life to Christ and now knows the peace and joy that had eluded her as a Hindu priestess. Today she is blessing others as an active member of the Dzongkha listener club in her village. Praise God!
