Genesis
Genesis is the first book of the Bible. The book starts with the big origin stories, including the creation of the world, the fall into sin, the flood, and the tower of Babel. Then Genesis focuses on Abraham and his family. As you read, one thing to consider is God's covenant relationship with his people. How does God's relationship with his people develop over Genesis?

Day 55

The Lord Our God

Read: Deuteronomy 5-7

The people are to realize that even though it was their forefathers who were literally present, the Ten Commandments have been spoken to them. So now the Ten Commandments are repeated with the emphasis that this generation is to obey them, for they are the commandments of the Lord our God. So also the Bible is to be the living word to us; through it our God is speaking to us, calling us to trust and obey.

Following the Ten Commandments, we have the Great Commandment, to love the Lord our God with our whole being.

These commandments are not only for the present moment; they are for the future. They are to be taught diligently to our children. They are to stimulate questions from our children which will give us the opportunity to explain how our God is our Redeemer. The commandments are not the way of salvation. Obeying them is the response to God’s grace that he desires.

God’s people are to be a holy people. To be holy is to be separated unto, to be dedicated to, the service of God. God is the faithful covenant-keeping God, but we are to respond with a love which proves itself in obedience.

PRAYER
Father, we rejoice that we are saved by grace. We also rejoice that we are called to a life of loving obedience. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
