Genesis
Genesis is the first book of the Bible. The book starts with the big origin stories, including the creation of the world, the fall into sin, the flood, and the tower of Babel. Then Genesis focuses on Abraham and his family. As you read, one thing to consider is God's covenant relationship with his people. How does God's relationship with his people develop over Genesis?

Day 54

The Lord Alone Is God

Read: Deuteronomy 3-4

Having finished rehearsing their history, Moses said, “And now, O Israel, give heed to the statutes” (4:1). The message from God always ends with “and now.” This is the truth, “and now” this is what you should do about it. Sound doctrine is never an end in itself; it is always a call to sound action on our part.

These people not only knew what God had done in dealing with their ancestors in the past; they also had seen the recent punishment for sin at Baal-peor. Therefore as they enter the Promised Land, they are to keep God’s commandments. They were told “keep your soul diligently, lest you forget” (4:9). We constantly need sermons like those of Moses. We need to be reminded over and over again how God deals with his people, giving us blessings as we obey him and causing us to suffer the consequences when we disobey.

We are likewise to tell these things to our children and our children’s children. God’s truths are for them as well. They stand in danger of forgetting and thus losing the blessings God intends for them.

Again and again there is the reminder that the Lord alone is God. There will be temptations to serve other gods which are no gods. Such temptations must be resisted. A god is something in which you center your life or from which you think you can find ultimate happiness. Remember, the Lord alone is God!

PRAYER
Father, keep us from forgetting the truth so we do not lose our spiritual heritage. In Christ’s name. Amen.
