God Is No Longer Silent

Read: Job 38-39

All along Job has asked that God will enter into conversation with him. Finally God obliges. But he does not answer Job’s questions. Instead he bombards Job with a series of his own questions. He intends, on the one hand, to take Job seriously, and on the other hand, to overwhelm him with a realization that God’s wisdom and God’s power put him in a league all by himself. In an age when people often acts as if they could stand on the same plane as God, we need to realize that we are frail creatures of clay who know so little, that we should listen to God with a humble spirit.

Human beings often think they are smart, but in the light of God’s perfect wisdom, we need to realize that often we do not know what we are talking about, yet we keep talking. God said, “Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?” (38:2). The barrage of God’s questions is meant to put us all in our place. The scientist knows so little; good scientists realize that, but often second-rate ones do not. The Bible scholar knows so little; he often builds theories on slim evidence and later takes his theories as facts. God sends forth a barrage of questions to which we do not have the answers. This is meant to humble Job, and us. What an amazing world God has made. Let us stand in awe of our Creator.
