Day 102
The Wisdom of Solomon
Read: 1 Kings 3-5
God said to Solomon, “Ask what I shall give you” (3:5). Likewise, Jesus invited his disciples, and by extension us as well, to ask in his name for whatever we wish (John 14:13-14). Solomon asked for wisdom, and in James we are told that if we ask for wisdom, God will surely give it to us if we ask in faith (James 1:5-6).
God seemed pleased with what Solomon does not ask for: riches and honor. It is a striking thought that God is often pleased with what we do not pray for! Because Solomon asked for wisdom, God not only gave him that but also riches and honor. Jesus teaches us in similar fashion: “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things [that is, material things we need] will be added to you” (Matt. 6:33 ESV).
Following the opening chapters of 1 Kings is an outstanding illustration of Solomon’s wisdom. Like the true mother, when we really love someone, we are willing to sacrifice our desires for his or her sake. Solomon was wiser than those who had a reputation for their great wisdom. In his wisdom, he wrote proverbs and songs telling how to live. First Kings 4:20 tells us that with such a wise king, the people of Judah and Israel were happy. Those who are in responsible places of government today should realize that they have been placed in such positions not for their own gain but for the sake of others. We should each use whatever power and abilities such as we have to serve others.
PRAYER
Father, raise up government leaders in our day who will seek the welfare of the people. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
