Read: Ephesians 6:13-17
Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth. (v. 14)
Brother Lawrence (1614-1691) wrote, “we must do our business faithfully without trouble or disquiet, recalling God to our mind tranquilly as often as we find it wandering from him” (The Practice of the Presence of God). Fear is one of the strongest human emotions, but if we keep our focus on God and his promises we will be able to say with the psalmist, “when I am afraid, I put my trust in you” (Ps. 56:3).
Make no mistake; there’s plenty to be afraid of in this world. But take heart: he that is in us is greater than he that is in the world. And our fellow believers are fighting with us, side by side. Have there not been times when you have been strengthened in your struggle by looking at the faith and courage of a Christian friend undergoing suffering or adversity?
Paul’s first word of exhortation is “Stand!” In his mind, perhaps, was the image of a phalanx of soldiers standing their ground ready to receive the enemy’s attack. Christian soldiers are in full battle dress, well equipped and ready to die, if necessary, for our cause. Why? Because truth is on our side. To speak this way today isn’t politically correct. Truth, it is said, cannot be the monopoly of any person or group. This is nothing new. “What is truth?” sneered Pilate to Jesus. He was asking the right person.
Jesus Christ is the Truth. So, when the world attacks, “Stand!”
As you pray, worship God as the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
