Read: John 14:22-31
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. (v. 27)
Many churches have a practice of “passing the peace,” a mutual greeting as they begin worship. I appreciate this opportunity to verbally share Jesus’s message of peace with others and to extend a handshake or hug. If we want to see peace in the world, this is where it should begin, in the pews of local churches. But how can we go beyond this brief exchange and practice peacemaking during the week?
In this passage, Jesus offers the kind of peace that begins internally, doesn’t depend on circumstances, and isn’t measured by worldly standards. This deep, abiding peace is rooted in Jesus’s promise to never leave us. It’s his peace, “which transcends all understanding” (Phil. 4:7 NIV). His peace will protect our hearts and minds when we are anxious or afraid. The disciples did not realize how much they would need this assurance as Jesus prepared them for his eventual departure: they’d have to unite, with encouragement and support for each other. Peaceful relationships aren’t necessarily perfect, but when a passion for the Prince of Peace unites people, we’re equipped to face uncertainty and adversity.
So as we extend a hand and offer the peace of Christ, we prepare for the week ahead, giving reassurance that God’s peace will permeate our hearts, come what may.
As you pray, ask Jesus to fill you with his peace, and that it may overflow to others.
