Live by the Spirit

Read: Galatians 5:16-25

If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. (v. 25)

Yesterday we were reminded of the wonderful gift of the Holy Spirit. Most of the biblical resolutions we’re covering in these first fifteen days of the New Year are difficult to live out. Because of the effects of sin on human beings we are selfish by nature; we get easily distracted, and despite our best intentions we often give up on resolutions. The Holy Spirit empowers us to live fully and faithfully for Jesus. God’s Spirit helps us bear spiritual fruit, qualities of character and behavior expressing inner transformation (Gal. 5:22-23), rather than succumb to the desires of the flesh. It’s not easy. In Matthew 26:41, Jesus said, “Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

In today’s reading from Galatians 5, we can see the difference between being led by the flesh versus led by the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:5 tells us, “Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires” (NIV). Living by the flesh may bring short-term pleasure, but living by the Spirit leads to the best life and honors God.

As you pray, use David’s prayer from Psalm 51:10-12: “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me” (NIV).
