Live by Faith

Read: John 15:1-17

Abide in me, and I in you. (v. 4)

My wife and I grow plants in our home, yard, and garden. Each plant requires water, light, and fertile soil. When roots and plants have these elements, they are more likely to produce green leaves, flowers, or enjoyable food. In John 15, Jesus uses the analogy of a vine and branches to show how we must be connected to Christ in order to bear fruit. Branches that are cut or broken from the vine will dry up and die.

Christians must be connected to Christ. Many of the biblical resolutions we look at in the days ahead can help us stay connected to Jesus and be spiritually fruitful. A few examples include actively spending time reading God’s Word, praying, worshiping, and living by faith. Today’s passage calls us to practice obedience, love, and fruitfulness. Perhaps you’ve tried for too long to make it on your own. Jesus said to his disciples, “If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5 NIV).

Earlier he had also said, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (10:10). If Jesus is not an active part of our life, we miss out on true, abundant, meaningful life. A branch disconnected from the vine withers. How can you take steps to abide in Christ and experience the life God intends for you?

As you pray, open your heart and mind to the ways Jesus wants you to live in a deeper relationship with him.
