The Way, the Truth, and the Life

Read: John 13:36-14:7

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)

Our family was lost. My husband and I had taken our four young kids out for a hike, and we’d foolishly left the path, and now we were all wandering through the forest. “At least,” I said, “if we find the trail, we’ll know which way to take it to get back to our car.” “Yes,” my husband said—and at the exact moment that I pointed left, he pointed right! We were so lost, we couldn’t even agree on which way we should turn if we ever got back to the trail.

Human beings are fully lost when it comes to figuring out how to reconcile with God. People have come up with so many systems, religions, and spiritual practices that all seem to contradict each other. When it comes to finding God, we’re all in the position of Thomas, who said to Jesus, “We do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” (John 14:5). Thankfully, Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. If we want to find the way to God, we simply go through Jesus.

When we put our faith in Jesus, he makes a promise to us: “if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also” (v. 3). We cannot find the way on our own; all we have to do is trust in Jesus.

As you pray, ask God to show you the way.
