Grateful for Sunsets

Read: Psalm 2

Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. (v. 11)

My family lives about 25 miles from the sandy shores of Lake Michigan. While we do not often watch the sunset over the vast waters, our view to the west provides the chance to see vivid pinks, oranges, and yellows as the sun dips beyond the waves.

It’s great to anticipate a reliable, enjoyable ending, like the beauty of the sunset. In contrast, it’s very hard to endure uncertainty about what will happen next. Psalm 2, written by David (see Acts 4:25), is like the story of one side (God) that knows how the story ends, and the other side (the nations) that are blindly acting out with no concern for the final outcome. The kings of the earth collaborate in rebellion (vv. 2-3), while God sits on his throne and laughs at their folly (v. 4) before instilling terror in them (v. 5) and installing Jesus as King with the authority to rule over all (vv. 6-9).

How often are we like those foolish nations and kings, acting like we have it all figured out, instead of humbly trusting the one who really does?

If you’re not sure how your earthly story ends, rest assured God wants you to spend eternity with him. If you have repented of your sins and put your faith in Jesus, you can trust him through every sunset of life, living with certainty that he holds each of your tomorrows in his hands. “Blessed are all who take refuge in him” (v. 12).

As you pray, thank God for the gift of Jesus, the one and only King.
