The Prayer to End all Prayers

Read: Revelation 21:1-4, 22:20-21

Come, Lord Jesus! (Rev. 22:20)

There is no better way to end these devotions on prayer than to consider the prayer that the Bible ends with: “Come, Lord Jesus!”

In our world today, it’s common to hear cries of all kinds: “End injustice!” “End human trafficking!” “End racism!” As Christians, we agree with all these cries. And yet praying “Come, Lord Jesus!” raises the bar to a much higher level. It includes those cries and several more that are much greater: “End sin!” “End all suffering!” “End death!”

By praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!” we are asking God to end everything that makes this world a broken place. It’s asking God to come and make all things new. “Then,” John says, “I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away” (Rev. 21:1). God’s dwelling place will then be among the people, and he will dwell with them. “They will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God” (v. 3) “Come, Lord Jesus!” means that when Jesus returns, “neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away” (v. 4).

This is the prayer to end all prayers because when Jesus returns, our faith will become sight, and prayer will no longer be necessary. Instead, we will forever enjoy the presence of God. What a day that will be! Oh yes, “Come, Lord Jesus!”

As you pray, pray for Christ’s return to put all things right.
