Praying for God’s Guidance

Read: Psalm 25:1-7

Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior. (vv. 4-5 NIV)

In the movie It’s a Wonderful Life, George Bailey, the main character of the film, is seated at a bar, praying for God’s guidance. A large sum of money had gone missing from his building and loan company, and George is very worried. George is in big trouble, so he prays, quietly under his breath, “Dear Father in heaven, I’m not a praying man . . . I’m at the end of my rope. . . . Show me the way, O God.”

“Show me the way”—I’ve used those words, and probably you have too. Prayer for guidance is one of the most frequent prayers God hears from us. That’s because often in life, troubles come unexpectedly, and we simply don’t know what to do. Asking a friend or family member, or even your pastor is good. But there’s another important step to take.

Our reading today is a prayer for restoration and guidance. The psalmist turns to God: “To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. O my God, in you I trust” (vv. 1-2). Instead of depending on himself and his own strength and determination to overcome the threats of others, he prays “Show me your ways, Lord” (v. 4). Then he relies on God’s steadfast love (v. 7). We need to do the same.

As you pray, ask God to guide you and make his will for you clear.
