Read: John 6:41-51
Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. (vv. 47-48)
This one statement says it all. There is absolutely nothing for us to do but believe. No words of ours, no actions, can grant us eternal life. Just the simple act of believing in the one who makes this promise. And it is, in fact, a promise.
Maybe you have heard the saying “There are no guarantees in life.” Perhaps that’s true if you place your faith in yourself or in the world around you. But here Jesus states with certainty the core truth of the Christian walk.
Notice that he first directs this truth to whoever, meaning that salvation is available to all. It does not discriminate. And then he states the only requirement for eternal life: whoever believes. Not in yourself, but in him.
Let me assure you that there is no wiggle room here. On the one hand, the way to salvation is clear, but it is also singular. It is the only path.
For today, reaffirm your faith in the one who truly made this promise. If you have never placed your trust in him, do so now. It’s as simple as a prayer.
Talk to God, ask for his forgiveness, and tell him that you want to follow him. It is truly that simple. It is truly that beautiful. And, Jesus is truly waiting to hear from you.
As you pray, affirm, or reaffirm, your eternal trust and faith in Jesus.
