Read: Genesis 15:1-21
Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them. (v. 5)
As a young girl who loved the night sky, I adorned the walls and ceiling of my bedroom with glow-in-the-dark stars. These plastic stars came in packs of 50 or 100, which seemed innumerable to me as I spent hours choosing the perfect spot for each star and affixing them to my wall with tiny dots of sticky tack. I couldn’t wait for it to be dark outside so I could watch them dazzle my room with their comforting glow at night. Each morning, I would inevitably find stars on the floor that had fallen as I slept. It became a never-ending task to keep the stars up in my sky, but I loved it nonetheless.
It seems God is happy to keep the stars up for us too—though I doubt he struggles like I did to keep each star in place. God created the stars and pointed to them as signs of his faithfulness from the beginning, so it should not surprise us that God used stars as witness of his covenant with Abram.
In today’s Bible reading, God invites Abram to look up and count the stars if he can, promising to make Abram and Sarai’s offspring as innumerable as the stars and give them a permanent homeland. Because of Jesus, we are now God’s children. The story of God’s faithfulness to Abram and his children is our story too—we are the stars in Abraham’s sky.
