Rest in God

Read: John 14:15-31

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. (v. 27)

God is always calling us to rest in his Son’s finished work at the cross. At the cross you were redeemed, you were forgiven and made new. However, it can be hard to trust that this forgiveness covers all our sins. Even though we know that the enemy is a liar, we have time and again believed his deception over God’s truth about us.

The word peace in Hebrew is shalom, which also means wholeness, harmony, completeness, prosperity, welfare, and tranquility, all of which are ingredients of rest. In his last meal shared with his disciples, Jesus offered them, and us, the gift of the Holy Spirit, “the Helper” who brings shalom. This is an inward reality for every believer in Jesus and is a foretaste of his promise made earlier: “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever” (v. 16).

We can rest in God’s sovereignty and in our identity as his children. His promises are also our defense against fear and anxiety. Immediately after offering us the gift of peace, Jesus presents a warning, “Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (John 14:27). This gift of peace gives the power to rest and shields us from fear. —Keziah Namusaazi (Manager of Production and Broadcast, Words of Hope Uganda)

As you pray, rest in God’s promises and ask God to fill you with peace.
