Read: Colossians 3:5-17
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. (v. 16)
When I was around four years old, I wrote songs to the hum of the vacuum cleaner. My mom cleaned the house, and while she worked, I sang. I don’t remember the words to any of the songs, but I do remember the joy I felt as I created new melodies to the ordinary sound of the vacuum cleaner. The world felt lighter because of God’s gift of creativity.
Colossians 3 contains two lists: a list of what is “earthly,” and a list of what is godly. The good things clothe us and equip us to face each day. The linchpin of the outfit is love. In this fashion, we learn how we should interact with one another as part of the body of Christ. As we internalize the word of Christ, it becomes part of us. We can then teach and correct one another and give thanks to God through creativity—“psalms and hymns and spiritual songs” (v. 16). This expresses our delight in God.
In my own life, I have found that when I offer my creative gifts to God, I experience delight and joy throughout the creative process too. Take a moment to offer something creative to God—a song, a short poem, a handcrafted project, or even a creative grocery list. See how this creative offering fills your own heart with praise. —April Fiet
