Read: Romans 8:31-39
We are more than conquerors through him who loved us. (v. 37)
Our climb up the mountain of Romans 8 began with the life-giving declaration “no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (v. 1). It ends with the breathtaking view from the summit that nothing “will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (v. 39). Paul gazed at this endless horizon of God’s grace and asked, “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” (v. 31).
No one can stand against us (v. 31) or charge us (v. 33) or condemn us (v. 34) because the only one who could keep us separated gave his beloved Son to win for us what we could never earn, and cancel a debt we could never pay. Jesus took all that Satan and sin could throw at us; he was charged with our crimes and condemned to our death. He was “regarded as sheep to be slaughtered” (v. 36).
Before knowing Jesus, we are condemned sinners worthy of death. Now “we are more than conquerors through him who loved us” (v. 37). Standing on this mountain, gazing at God’s grace, we can live with the trust in God described in Q&A 28 of the Heidelberg Catechism: “We can be patient when things go against us, thankful when things go well, and for the future we can have good confidence in our faithful God and Father that nothing in creation will separate us from his love.” —Jon Opgenorth
