Read: Psalm 75:1-10
For not from the east or from the west and not from the wilderness comes lifting up, but it is God who executes judgment, putting down one and lifting up another. (vv. 6-7)
God’s judgment comes at the set time. He sent his Son at just the right time. He will send his Son back to earth at the right time. His perfect judgment will come at the right time too, not when we expect it, but in God’s timing.
God oversees and rules by bringing the haughty down. He lifts up the humble. This is a constant theme in Scripture. We find the same truth in the Song of Hannah (1 Samuel 2) and the Magnificat of Mary (Luke 1:46-55).
This being true, it ought to impact your life. If you walk proudly, God will bring you down. If you walk humbly with God and your fellow human beings, God will raise you up. Pride is one of the worst sins, and God deals with it severely. Humility is one of the greatest qualities a person can have, and God will bless those who possess it.
It is difficult to see ourselves accurately. I do not always realize when I am expressing pride. May God open our eyes to see ourselves clearly. When we realize we are sinners saved by grace, we have every reason to be humble. —Harry Buis
As you pray, ask God to help you see your own pride, and repent of it. Turn to God with humility as your Savior.

The Rev. Harry Buis served as a Reformed Church in America pastor for 41 years, serving six congregations. He had a consuming passion for the Word of God, preached and written, and would take up his pen to share that passion at a moment’s notice. His enthusiasm for God and the Bible was his signature. Rev. Buis edited the Words of Hope daily devotional for twenty years, and wrote several books and numerous articles. He also taught as an adjunct at Hope College, Western Theological Seminary, and Kuyper College. He served the church in many capacities, and was elected President of General Synod of the RCA in 1980. Rev. Buis died of cancer in 2001.
