But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us. (v. 22)
In the 1947 movie Miracle on 34th Street, Kris Kringle is an elderly eccentric who works as a holiday Santa Claus. However, Kringle insists that he is the real Santa. A young girl named Suzie doubts Kringle’s claim but asks him for a new house for Christmas. Disappointed when her request is unfulfilled, Suzie is told that faith means “believing in things . . . when common sense tells you not to.” Later that day, Suzie spots the house she wanted with a “For Sale” sign out front.
In Mark 9, we see the hope in a father’s eyes starting to fade away. The disciples were unable to drive out the evil spirit that was tormenting his son. Supposing nothing more could be done, the father turned to Jesus who was approaching and asked if he could heal his son. Jesus put the onus on the father and said, “All things are possible for one who believes” (v. 23). Admitting his doubt, the father shouted, “I believe; help my unbelief!” (v. 24). Jesus responded to the father’s faith and healed his son.
Despite our strong conviction about the gospel, the Christian life is often one of faith mixed with doubt. We believe, but we are disappointed when our faith falters, and sometimes we are—as the hymn writer describes—“prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love” (“Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing”). —Ericka Loynes
