Be holy, for I am holy. (v. 44)
God calls us to be holy, but have you wondered if this is even possible? Maybe you imagine that if you’re not a pastor or working in ministry, you’re not as holy. Maybe you compare yourself to Christians around you and think that they’re much better Christians. While our lives are all different, and we are all growing, the base call is to be holy. This is your base calling as a Christian, to be set apart.
In the book of Leviticus, God laid out the Law for Israel. The expectations were very high! Thankfully, God also provided a means of forgiveness through the sacrificial system. When someone broke a law, they could with a contrite heart make a sacrifice and be forgiven according to the precepts laid out in God’s Law.
What does it mean to be holy? It means to be set apart. The Law may, at first glance, appear rigid and restrictive. This had the effect of setting Israel apart from the nations around it. Likewise, the gospel sets Christians apart from the world. To be holy—to be set apart—means to follow Christ and his ways. It isn’t always easy, but, as Jesus said, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me . . . and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matt. 11:29-30). —Steve Wierenga
