How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! (v. 17)
Like most Americans, I love my smart phone! I have questions, and it has answers. I can ask for movie times, driving directions—even a recipe—and up pops the information on my screen. It’s like magic! But I would never ask my phone for advice or guidance for living. My cell phone doesn’t really know me. It has information only—no wisdom.
The fact that God knows everything is another one of his “omni-” attributes: omniscience, which means “knows all.” Psalm 139 celebrates this aspect of God’s nature, but the psalmist focused on God’s knowledge of him, personally. God doesn’t just know all things; he knows everything about each of us. We have no secrets from him. He is the one who created us—“you knitted me together in my mother’s womb” (v. 13). He knows our lives from start to finish; our days were written in his book, long before we existed. God’s thoughts about us are more than the sands of the sea! He is intimately concerned with our lives.
God knows everything—much more than we could ever imagine. That alone causes us to marvel. But his complete knowledge of us makes us run to him for wisdom and help and guidance. He hears our prayers, and he has given us his Word, which makes us “wise for salvation” (2 Tim. 3:15). This is how he leads us “in the way everlasting” (Ps. 139:24). —Laura N. Sweet
