Read: Psalm 90
Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. (v. 2)
The COVID-19 pandemic has reminded us all of the precarious nature of human existence. We discovered how quickly everything can change in our daily lives. We realized how vulnerable we are, even in good health, to physical ailments. And we were sadly reminded of human mortality as thousands were struck down by this virus.
Psalm 90 considers similar ideas. The writer lamented the brevity of human life, and that, even if we live past 70 years, “their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away” (v. 10). But while we live and then return to dust, the Lord himself is “from everlasting to everlasting” (v. 2). He existed before the earth, the mountains, or anything else that exists. Indeed, he was the one who created them! Time has no hold on him, as he exists outside of it. “For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past” (v. 4).
Our time on earth is brief, but we can still impact eternity when we focus on what is eternal. “Teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom” (v. 12). For Christians there is more to life than just this world; there is an eternity in heaven to worship and serve the eternal God! That realization gives us the perspective we need to live daily for him. —Laura N. Sweet
