If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son? (v. 45)
About 1,000 years after the glorious kingdoms of David and Solomon, a son is born in their royal line. He is not born in a palace, cradled in comfort; he grows up in humility and obscurity in a backwater town of the Roman Empire. But this heir to David’s throne is not what he seems! He speaks words of wisdom greater than those of Solomon. He performs acts of power so much greater than those of an earthly king.
The religious leaders of his day just don’t get it. They reject him as Israel’s Messiah—David’s descendant who would free his people. They plot against him. They question him and try to entangle him in his own words. But Jesus challenges their understanding of just who the Messiah is. If he is just a descendant of David—why does David, inspired by the Holy Spirit, call him “Lord”? Could the Messiah be greater than David or Solomon or any earthly king? Could he be something more?
He is so much more! He is David’s Lord, and Solomon’s Lord—and our Lord as well. He is Jesus Christ, God the Son, who came to earth—not to free his people politically, but to redeem them from the curse of sin to become the people of God forever. David and Solomon were sinful men, but Jesus Christ is the true King of all kings and Lord of all lords. May his name be praised forever! —Laura N. Sweet
