Read: Psalm 72:1-17
May all kings fall down before him, all nations serve him! (v. 11)
We have spent some time looking at the life of Solomon, but what are some things we can take away for ourselves? What role do we see Solomon playing in Scripture?
One reason Solomon is significant is as a “type” of Christ. His glorious reign at the height of Israel’s greatest age anticipates the eternal reign of Christ over his kingdom. Psalm 72, we read, is “of Solomon”; many believe it was written for his coronation. Many of the petitions in this prayer became true in the reign of Solomon. Righteous judgment was experienced in his kingdom. Prosperity and peace flourished for the nation. Rulers from faraway lands, like Sheba, paid him tribute.
Still, Solomon’s reign was relatively brief, and his family’s dynasty was cut short because of his sin. He was a mere man, despite his wisdom and his position as king. But Psalm 72 takes on a prophetic voice as it speaks to the one who will reign “to the ends of the earth” (v. 8). This king will bless all people and nations; his name will “endure forever” (v. 17). These verses can only be speaking of the Messiah—Jesus, the eternal king of glory! His kingdom will extend over all the earth. His peace and benevolence will never come to an end. He is the Son of God—so much greater than Solomon was or ever could be (Matthew 12:42). May his eternal kingdom, in all its fullness, come soon! —Laura N. Sweet
