Read: Amos 5:11-15
Therefore because you trample on the poor and you exact taxes of grain from him, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not dwell in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine. (v. 11)
According to the Wall Street Journal, the collective wealth of Americans set a new record in 2018 by exceeding $100 trillion. As a country, the United States has been blessed with abundant wealth.
The northern kingdom of Israel was also economically blessed in the time of the prophet Amos. Trade was booming and the Israelites were experiencing unprecedented affluence. However, as their prosperity increased, corruption increased as well. The powerful often gained control at the expense of others. Greed, cruelty, and even indifference to the poor was rampant. In God’s prophetic vision given to Amos, God warned the Israelites that any gain they received unjustly would be taken from them. In this way, God was emphasizing that how we treat others matters.
Our wealth is a great blessing, but it can also become a temptation that lures us away from loving others the way Jesus taught us. Generosity is the antidote. Seek opportunities to be generous with your money, your time, and your words. Give to those who can give you nothing in return. It is when we bless others that we become truly rich in Christ. —Kelly Slaybaugh
