Read: Joel 1:1-4
Tell your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children to another generation. (v. 3)
My father loves to share stories from his younger days. Sometimes the stories are funny, but many times they have a bigger message. Hearing his experiences often teaches me something that can help me in my life.
The prophet Joel is urging the people of Judah, the southern kingdom of a divided Israel, to also share their story. The Israelites experienced a locust plague that overtook the land and brought devastation. Joel is comparing this plague of locusts with the coming day of the Lord, the day when all people will be judged. Like the swarm of locusts, the day of the Lord will also be complete in its destruction. The devastation will be hard to imagine. But for those who had experienced something catastrophic, it was easier to understand. God loved the Israelites and wanted to warn them that this day was coming so that they would have every opportunity to be prepared. Therefore, Joel implores them to share their devastating experience with their children and future generations in hopes that they will learn from it.
