Background

Bordered by India to the south and Tibet to the north, Nepal contains eight of the world’s ten highest mountains. With its rugged terrain and geographical isolation, Nepal was never controlled by colonial powers. Official corruption and subsistence poverty were factors in provoking a Maoist insurgency from 1996 until 2008. With the emergence of a Maoist-led coalition government, peace and stability have finally taken hold as democracy displaced Nepal’s corrupt monarchy.

On February 1, 2009 Words of Hope launched a new radio outreach to the Himalayan nation of Nepal. “Journey of the Cross” is an indigenously produced 30-minute broadcast in the Nepali language. The programs air twice each week via a network of FM stations based in Nepal’s capital city of Kathmandu.

Ministry Updates

“I’m proud to let you know that our trial period of broadcasting has gone well,” reports Pastor Arbin. “We are giving 30 minutes of preaching and Cross-Way Church info, etc. People are getting attuned to listening to Reformed preaching. I’m enjoying it. Right now I edit my sermons (for content) and my technician friend makes a final draft of it. Now I’ve asked the radio station to air it twice a week (perhaps even the same message) which they are willing to do. We are grateful to extend our ministry in this manner. There are potential young people in our church who are becoming encouraged in media ministries. They hope to produce more youth-related programs like recording testimonies, dramatic storytelling, other such creative ministries. This is to say there is more we could look forward to doing in the future.”
