Paul’s Gratitude

by: Geoffrey Cox

Several times now Paul has offered himself as someone to copy. These last verses tell us a little more about both writer and readers. The Philippians really did care about Paul. They showed a very practical concern for his well-being. It becomes clear here that Paul’s support throughout his ministry had come, again and again, from the Christians in Philippi. I wonder if Paul was thinking of them when he wrote of “those who by persistence in doing good, seek glory, honor and immortality” (Rom. 2:7 NIV). He was pleased not only for what he received but for how they themselves would benefit spiritually by their own generosity.

Paul also wants to emphasize God’s utter trustworthiness as he has experienced it. Paul is able to be content in a positive and ungrudging way in every circumstance (vv. 11-12). The grace of contentment with what God has given us is much to be sought and desired. Paul is confident of God’s provision of strength to cope in every situation (v. 13), though each time this strength will be measured out to fit the particular needs. God sometimes delivers us through, instead of from, a challenge.

Paul knows that God’s ability to care for everyone is limited only by the riches of Christ Jesus (v. 19), which, of course, are limitless! So there will be plenty to meet not only Paul’s needs, but the Philippians as well.

And mine.

And yours.
