Exalted Bodies

Dostoevsky wrote, “When a man knocks on the door of a prostitute, he is looking for God.” We may disagree but it does prompt the question: Why do people seek sexual relations outside of marriage? Part of the answer is loneliness; that’s why many people turn on the TV upon rising in the morning and watch talk shows: to feel like they are part of a group. People long for human contact.

Do they think that by getting physically close to someone they will be satisfied? Partners in such relationships are seeking to get rather than give. End result? Dissatisfaction and loneliness return. Sexual adventurers put their marriages at risk and relationships with their children are rarely the same again. Many ruin promising careers.

The apostle Paul gives a powerful motive for resisting sexual temptation. He reminds us of our union with Christ, which makes our bodies members of Christ. So imagine this: joining the body of Jesus to an unlawful sexual partner. A Christian cannot simply ask, “Should I do this?” Rather, we must ask, “Jesus, should you and I do this together?”

Sexual union within marriage involves the blessing of the Creator. Unholy unions involve the judgment of God. Are there behavioral changes you should make because your body is a member of Christ?
