Words of Hope

Good News. No Boundaries

Who’s Smart?

It had been a long ride from Kalamazoo to Milwaukee. A senior member of our college debate team had beaten up on me mentally and emotionally. His mind was quick, his logic flawless. We weren’t discussing nuclear-weapons development, the collegiate debate topic of the year. The topic was the Christian faith. More precisely, my Christian faith. I found myself under relentless attack. The Christian faith survived, but that evening I was exhausted. I could imagine Pascal and Augustine, those grand defenders of the faith, frowning down upon me.

Before going to sleep that night, I opened my New Testament, looking for a word of reassurance. But where to look? I shoved my thumb in and opened it. My eyes fell upon these words: “Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?” I swallowed hard. Had I read rightly? Did the Bible really say that? Was God really that concerned for me?

I don’t remember how our debate team fared the next day. I only remember how God spoke to me that night in no uncertain terms. What’s your struggle? Is something tearing you apart? Look to God and his Word for your comfort and guidance. He is real. He speaks to us. He really does care about us.
