The Voice / East Africa / Luganda
Background
Uganda, with a population of 27 million, is known as the “Pearl of Africa.” “The devastation of the Idi Amin and Milton Obote years with unrestrained terror, murder, tribal warfare and corruption destroyed much of the economic and social fabric of the nation and hastened the spread of AIDS. Recovery will take many years.” [Operation World]
Luganda is the majority language of Southern Uganda. It has more than 10 million speakers ranging across social class and income. In partnership with the [Anglican] Church of Uganda, Words of Hope Uganda has been broadcasting in Luganda since 2006. A new studio, dedicated in October 2009, will enable the team to produce a greater number and variety of programs.
Ministry Updates
“We have most of our programs broadcast on Spirit FM here in Mukono. I can gladly say that Luganda is now managing the competition with Bari programs. We never got many responses from Luganda production, but now they always come seeking for prayer, counseling, partnership, and encouragement. There is much more work to do ... It is a sure deal for one of our most urgent broadcasts because the harvest there is plentiful." [Program Coordinator Joshua Ssali]
