The Voice / South Asia / Kashmiri
Background
Kashmiri is spoken by 3 million Muslims living in the Kashmir valley, a remote region high in the Himalayas. Kashmir, India’s only state with an Islamic majority, has been the focus of decades of armed tension between India and Pakistan. Widespread guerilla fighting has spread through all of Kashmir. Weary from years of terrorist bombings and killings, many Kashmiri Muslims are more open than ever to Christ’s gospel of peace. Although the percentage of Christians seems low (0.16%), that number is undoubtedly understated due to the perception that it is often dangerous to openly express anything contrary to the militant hard line.
